BOTOX® Cosmetic

Please visit our Before and After Images for actual patient photographs.

What is Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium (toxin type A). When injected into the muscles which cause frown lines it reduces localized activity of said muscles. The result is that the muscles then become atrophied over time and the frown lines are diminished and in some cases prevented. Results are only temporary and repeat treatments are necessary to achieve long-term results. Results also vary from one individual to another and some patients experience the desired effects from treatment for longer or shorter periods of time, depending on how their body reacts to Botox.

Is it Safe?

When properly administered and monitored by a licensed and trained doctor, Botox can be very safely used to treat frown lines. Some doctors/practitioners have used Botox “off-label” (for different uses other than the manufacturer has recommended) or in different quantities; however, Dr. Ortega is very conservative in his application and use of Botox, as he has been safely using it to treat his patients for many years without incident. All patients receive a comprehensive medical evaluation, and in the cases where treatment with Botox is contraindicated, such as infection at the proposed site of injection, or patients with hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation, alternative methods for treatment are discussed and proposed. Furthermore, use of Botox by patients with a clinical history of neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome is also not recommended as serious side-effects may result. In conclusion, Botox can be a very safe and highly effective anti-aging tool in the hands of a qualified, well-trained physician.

Is it Painful?

Botox injections are not typically painful as a very small needle is used for its application. Patients may feel a transient stinging and/or a slight burning sensation. This usually dissipates within a couple of minutes to a couple of hours after injection.

What Results Can I Expect?

Botox can produce significant results and can be a very effective anti-aging procedure. For actual patient photos, please visit our Before and After gallery. Results may vary from one individual to another. Results are visible anywhere from 3 to 4 days after injection up to approximately 4 months. A notable decrease in the ability to frown is apparent.

What are the Possible Side Effects?

As with any medical procedure, there are always possible risks and complications associated with the use of Botox, even when properly administered. Some of these risks include infection at the site of injection, excess weakness or atrophy of targeted or nearby muscles. Other possible side-effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Botox is also contraindicated in patients with neuromuscular disorders, pre-existing cardiovascular disease, or known sensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Since temporary ptosis (droopiness) of the eyelids can occur, great care should be taken in determining the injection sites and the quantities used.

Conclusion

Botox Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) can be an effective anti-aging tool in patients between the ages of 18-65 when used by a licensed, highly trained physician. Botox is available only by prescription from a licensed doctor and all patients should be properly counseled, medically evaluated, and have informed consent before making the determination to proceed with Botox for the treatment of frown lines. As with any and all medical procedures, one has to determine which course of action is right for you. Dr. Ortega has been safely and effectively using Botox Cosmetic for years without incident. Please contact us for further information or to set up a consultation with one of our highly trained clinical coordinators if you think Botox is right for you.
